About the City

Cape Town – The City of the Cap

Cape Town is the largest city in South Africa and, with around 4.7 million residents, the second largest city in the country. It lies between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans in the Western Cape province and stretches over 2,461 square kilometres. Since the founding of the first settlement in 1652, Cape Town has been the economic, cultural and political centre of the Western Cape province.

The city was founded by the Dutch and developed in the 18th century into the most important trading centre of southern Africa. After independence in 1910, it became the centre of South African culture, the Winelands and gastronomy.

World-famous are Table Mountain, the unmatched nature, the lively streets, the famous gastronomy and the cultural diversity. No wonder Cape Town attracts around 1 million international visitors every year.
