About the Station

Villa Las Estrellas – Polar Settlement in Antarctica

Villa Las Estrellas is the largest permanent settlement in Antarctica, located on King George Island in the South Shetland Islands. The facility is operated by the Chilean Navy and houses approximately 100 people, including researchers and their families.

As the only Antarctic settlement with permanently living children, Villa Las Estrellas is a unique place. The base has its own hospital, school and various comfort facilities that make life in the extreme Arctic possible.

The settlement was founded in 1946 and has been an important research center for Chilean Antarctic policy since then. Despite extreme conditions – temperatures below -40°C, polar nights and rough terrain – it is a sign of human resilience.
