About the Station

McMurdo Station – Polar Research in Antarctica

McMurdo Station is the largest research station in Antarctica, located on the shores of Lake McMurdo on Ross Island. Operated by the United States, it is the logistics hub for all Antarctic research.

In the summer season (November–March), the station houses up to 1,200 people; in winter, about 50–60 people remain. The base has its own airport, hospitals, laboratories and living quarters.

Founded in 1956 during the International Geophysical Year, McMurdo has been a central research center for climate change, geology, biology and astrophysics since then. The extreme isolation and harsh conditions make the station one of the most remote human settlements in the world.
