About the City

Tokyo – The City That Never Sleeps

Tokyo is Japan's capital and, with around 14 million residents, the most populous metropolitan area in the world. The city sits on Honshu, the main island, on the Pacific coast, and has evolved over centuries from the fishing village of Edo into a global cultural and economic powerhouse.

Founded in 1457 as Edo, the city became Japan's capital in 1868 and was renamed Tokyo – "Eastern Capital". After World War II it recovered rapidly and grew into the world's third-largest economy. Today Tokyo is a global centre for art, fashion, gastronomy and technology.

World-famous are its contrasts: ancient Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples beside futuristic skyscrapers, quiet gardens beside buzzing nightlife, traditional teahouses beside the latest shopping streets. No wonder the city attracts around 30 million international visitors every year.
