The pulsating metropolis of the UAE on the Persian Gulf combines futuristic architecture with desert flair – from the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall to the Palm Jumeirah and the Al Fahidi Historical District. Dubai is a city where past and future coexist side by side.
About the City
Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates and, with around 3.5 million residents, the largest city in the country. It lies on the Persian Gulf in the Arabian Desert and stretches over 4,114 square kilometres. Since the founding of the first settlement in 1833, Dubai has been the economic, cultural and political centre of the UAE.
The city was founded by fishing villages and developed in the 20th century from a small oasis into one of the wealthiest and most modern cities in the world. The oil discovery in 1966 and the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum shaped the rapid development.
World-famous are the futuristic skyline, the unmatched luxury architecture, the lively streets, the desert adventures and the cultural diversity. No wonder Dubai attracts around 16 million international visitors every year.
