The charming capital of the Netherlands on the IJssel combines green flair with modern design – from Dam Square and the Rijksmuseum to the Anne Frank House and the Jordaan district. Amsterdam is a city where tradition and modern coexist side by side.
About the City
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and, with around 900,000 residents, the largest city in the country. It lies on the IJssel and the Amsterdamer Meer and stretches over 165 square kilometres. Since its first written mention in 1275, Amsterdam has been the cultural, economic and political centre of the Netherlands.
The city was founded by fishing villages and developed in the 17th century into the most important trading centre in the world – as the centre of the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch Golden Age shaped the cityscape with palaces, canals and an unmatched art scene.
World-famous are the green canal district, the world-class museums, the lively streets, the unmatched cycling culture and the open lifestyle. No wonder Amsterdam attracts around 5 million international visitors every year.
