About the City
Buenos Aires is the largest city in Argentina and, with around 15 million residents, the largest city in the country. It lies on the Río de la Plata in the province of Buenos Aires and stretches over 2,030 square kilometres. Since the founding of the first settlement in 1536, Buenos Aires has been the economic, cultural and political centre of Argentina.
The city was founded by the Spanish and developed in the 19th century into the most important trading centre of South America. After independence in 1816, it became the centre of Argentine culture, tango and gastronomy.
World-famous are the European architecture, the unmatched tango culture, the lively streets, the famous gastronomy and the cultural diversity. No wonder Buenos Aires attracts around 7 million international visitors every year.
