The pulsating metropolis of India on the Arabian Sea combines historical architecture with modern dynamism – from the Gateway of India and Marine Drive to Juhu Beach and the Siddi Vinayak Temple. Mumbai is a city where past and future coexist side by side.
About the City
Mumbai is the largest city in India and, with around 20 million residents, the densest city in the country. It lies on the Arabian Sea in the state of Maharashtra and stretches over 603 square kilometres. Since the founding of the first settlement in 1675, Mumbai has been the economic, cultural and political centre of India.
The city was founded by the Portuguese and developed in the 19th century into the most important trading centre of British India. After independence in 1947, it became the centre of the Indian film industry (Bollywood) and the financial world.
World-famous are the famous streets, the unmatched joie de vivre, the lively street markets, the Bollywood film industry and the cultural diversity. No wonder Mumbai attracts around 20 million international visitors every year.
