The pulsating capital of Germany on the Spree combines turbulent history with modern flair – from Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag to Museum Island and the East Side Gallery. Berlin is a city where past and future coexist side by side.
About the City
Berlin is the capital of Germany and, with around 3.8 million residents, the largest city in the country. It lies on the Spree in the states of Berlin and Brandenburg and stretches over 891 square kilometres. Since its first written mention in 1236, Berlin has been the cultural, political and economic centre of Germany.
The city was founded by merchants on the Spree and developed over the centuries from a trading town to the capital of Prussia, then the German Empire, and after World War II to the capital of a united Germany. The division of the city in 1961 and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 shaped modern history.
World-famous are the modernist architecture, the lively neighbourhoods, the world-class museums, the unmatched nightlife and the creative energy of the city. No wonder Berlin attracts around 6 million international visitors every year.
