The charming capital of Austria on the Danube combines imperial grandeur with cosmopolitan flair – from the Hofburg Palace and St. Stephen's Cathedral to the Belvedere and the Prater. Vienna is a city where tradition and modernity coexist side by side.
About the City
Vienna is the capital and, with around 1.9 million residents, the largest city in Austria. It lies on the eastern edge of the Alps, on the Danube, and stretches over 415 square kilometres. Since its founding in the 12th century, Vienna has been the cultural, economic and political centre of the country.
The city experienced its rise under the Habsburgs and developed into an imperial residence and world capital of music. Today Vienna is a global meeting point for culture, art and gastronomy – a place where history and the present coexist side by side.
World-famous are the Hofburg Palace, St. Stephen's Cathedral and the imperial gardens. No wonder the city attracts around 10 million international visitors every year.
